These lessons are incorporated into the suggested schedule for all English courses. In other words, the same guide is used for all courses, and thus needs to be purchased only once. However, the guide is excellent for a stand-alone elective course for 1/2 credit. The purpose of these lessons is to sharpen the student’s awareness that writing is a dynamic, not a static, process. Students will take an active role by self-evaluating and rewriting their own papers. By learning certain principles about grammar and good style, the student should become a better writer not only from practicing, but from learning the “why” as well. Basically, these lessons will help students organize their thoughts better, improve their writing style, and increase their confidence towards the goal that they can write well.

This is a step-by-step guide for the student who needs to write a research paper for whatever reason. The guide was written for the high-school sudent in mind. The author recalls his being completely at a loss when, as a senior, he had to compose a research paper with very little guidance. The guide takes the student one step at a time, offering a six-week schedule to complete the project. The student will start with narrowing a topic, then finding sources, learning to make note cards, and drafting the paper. An example of a research paper is included in the guide, as well as examples of citations for the bibliography. The guide is in pdf format and has 54 pages.

Note: This guide is included in the course, A Survey of World Literature.

This two-week course is a follow-on companion to Moping Melancholy Mad: An Introduction to Poetry. Lessons include understanding various poetic devices such as imagery, personification, and allusion. The course tries to establish an objective view for interpreting poetry and not one that is purely subjective. Also included for the student's consideration is an essay by Arlo Bates, "Foundations of Work."

This study guide is designed to help students to understand selected poetry they have read and to provide exercises to increase their appreciation for poetry. The student guide will lead the student to appreciate the complexity and beauty of the poetry that they will experience. However, students need to remember this very important fact: poetry is not an academic exercise that only enriches the mind; poetry is for the heart and soul. Therefore, like all good literature, students must give themselves over to the experience. This is the greatest value of poetry—enjoying another’s experience, expressed in a pleasing way.
